What A School Counselor Does Social-Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process that helps children develop essential skills for managing emotions, setting positive goals, showing empathy for others, establishing positive relationships, and making responsible decisions. It focuses on teaching kids how to understand and regulate their emotions, interact positively with peers, and navigate challenges in a healthy way. By integrating SEL into their education, children become more resilient, better communicators, and more capable of working collaboratively, which ultimately supports their overall well-being and academic success.
Ways I Implement SEL:
Classroom Guidance - I visit each class once a month to discuss topics relevant to fostering students' social and emotional skills. I introduce SEL concepts through engaging lessons, discussions, and activities that promote self-awareness, empathy, and relationship-building. My goal is to help students understand and manage their emotions, develop healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions, ultimately supporting their overall well-being and academic success.
Small Group - During my lunch bunch small group, I create a relaxed and supportive space where students can share their thoughts and feelings. We focus on specific SEL topics, such as managing emotions, building friendships, and resolving conflicts. I facilitate discussions and activities that encourage self-expression and empathy, helping students practice communication and teamwork skills. This informal setting allows them to connect with peers, develop social skills, and build a sense of community, reinforcing the importance of emotional well-being and positive relationships.
One-On-One Counseling - Oftentimes I encounter students who need support more than what classroom or small group can provide. When requested by a student or teacher, or when I suspect that a check in may be needed, I provide a safe and confidential space in my office for students to discuss their feelings and experiences. This is not to be confused with therapy, but more so a brief, solution-focused alternative.
Together, we explore coping strategies and problem-solving skills to manage their challenges.
(In the event that the support provided here at school is not enough to meet the needs of a student, my first recommendation to parents will always be to seek therapy outside of school.)
